In the beginning of the book, he was the savior of the main character, Sumi Kitamura/Ashida (depending on when in the story you're talking about). They had a mutual feeling of desire towards each other. Nozumo constantly made excuses to see Sumi but Sumi always backed away, staying loyal to her grouchy husband. Her reason to hesitate probably gave Nozumo the feeling that, if Sumi's husband, Soichiro Ashida, was out of the picture, they could be free to love each other.
